My Loc Care Faves: A Simple Routine for Clean, Hydrated, Healthy Locs
When clients ask me for the “best products for locs,” I always start with the same answer: your locs do not need every product—your locs need the right product for the concern in front of us. A scalp that feels coated needs a different plan than dry loc lengths. A fresh retwist should not begin over heavy buildup. And a little finishing oil will never fix a scalp that first needs a proper cleanse.
At Holistic Tresses, I look at your scalp, root area, loc density, moisture level, color history, water exposure, product use, sport routine, and maintenance schedule before I recommend anything. That is how we keep your routine personal, elevated, and mindful of long-term loc health.
The loc-care order matters.
First, remove what does not belong on the scalp or loc. Then add the moisture, repair support, or finishing touch that actually fits your hair. I do not believe in covering up buildup with more oil, heavy butter, or another styling product.
1. Choose the right cleanse
A fresh, movable loc starts with a clean scalp. I choose a cleanser based on whether the priority is buildup removal, a moisture-conscious wash, or a more targeted scalp-care conversation.
MIZANI Moisture Fusion Gentle Clarifying Shampoo
This is the reset choice when locs feel coated, dull, slow to dry, or heavy with styling residue. I use a clarifying direction thoughtfully—not as a harsh every-wash default.
MIZANI Moisture Fusion Moisture Rich Shampoo
For loc lengths that need a softer, more moisture-conscious wash after the scalp has been properly assessed, this is one of my preferred directions.
Biolage Scalp Sync Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
This is a more targeted scalp-care option for visible flaking when its directions fit your needs. Persistent burning, painful patches, unusual shedding, or ongoing irritation should be assessed by a qualified medical professional—not managed with product guesses alone.
2. Add moisture with a complete rinse
Conditioning can be beautiful for dry loc lengths, but the professional difference is using only what is needed, rinsing thoroughly, and making sure the locs dry completely. The goal is softness and flexibility—not creamy residue sitting at the root or inside the loc.
- MIZANI Moisture Fusion Intense Moisturizing Mask is my moisture-focused treatment choice for dry loc lengths that need more softness and slip.
- Pureology Hydrate Conditioner is a refined rinse-out option for dry or color-treated lengths that need a lighter, moisture-conscious finish.
- OLAPLEX Nº.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner is a selected conditioning step for hair that needs smoother handling and a more polished feel after cleansing.
3. Finish lightly—do not grease the scalp
Oil belongs on the lengths and ends in small amounts. It can add sheen, softness, and help with a polished finish, but it should not be used to hide buildup or a scalp that needs to be washed.
- MIZANI 25 Miracle Nourishing Oil is a lightweight choice for loc lengths and ends that need a soft, finished look.
- OLAPLEX Nº.7 Bonding Oil is another less-is-more option when color-treated or dry lengths need shine and softness without a heavy feel.
For athletes, swimmers, and outdoor loc lifestyles
Sweat, pool water, beach days, sport headwear, travel, and repeated quick updos can change how your scalp and locs feel. The answer is not automatically a tighter retwist or a heavier oil. Your maintenance plan should account for scalp access, proper cleanup, complete dry-down, and measured tension at the root.
If water exposure, sweat, or stubborn buildup is part of your routine, read my Summer Hair Reset guide first, then come in for the plan that makes sense for your locs.
A simple routine is usually the best routine.
You may need one cleanser, one moisture or recovery step, and one finishing product—not a shelf full of products. I select the routine after I see what your hair and scalp have actually been through.
