How often should you do a Loc Retwist?

How often should you do a Loc Retwist?

There's no one answer for this because everyone's hair grows at different rates compiled with the various textures, density, issues etc. I like to create a plan of action with my clients from our first session where we can track what we did, timelines and map out best maintenance plan to ensure growth, retention and as much protection as possible.

Some general guidelines from my experience is:

  • Starter Locs: Retwist every 4-6 weeks, or even every 2-3 weeks for the first few months.
  • Budding Locs: Retwist every 4-6 weeks.
  • Teen Stage Locs: Retwist every 4-6 weeks.
  • Mature Locs: Retwist every 8-12 weeks or longer.

Factors to Consider include:

  • Hair Texture: Thinner hair may require more frequent retwists, while thicker, coarser hair might benefit from longer intervals.
  • Hair Maintenance: How often you wash and care for your locs can impact how frequently you need to retwist.
  • Lifestyle: If you engage in activities that cause your locs to sweat or become dirty, you might need to retwist more often.
  • Personal Preference: Some people prefer the look and feel of tighter roots, while others prefer looser roots, which can affect how often they retwist.

Over-retwisting can lead to traction alopecia, so it's crucial to find a balance that works for your hair and scalp.
