After Your Amino-Acid Smoothing Treatment: Color and Hair Care Plan

Your consultation snapshot

Hair characteristic Current assessment
Hair type / curl pattern Presented as 4B before stretching
Strand size Coarse
Density Low but seems due to some thinning - recommend serum targeting
Scalp No concerning scalp reaction reported during the service
Current color canvas Predominantly level 6–7 copper/orange-gold, with some lighter variation through the hair
Porosity behavior Appears dry and unevenly reflective; previously lightened ends appear more porous
Elasticity Not stretching, no obvious shedding but strands are week with breakage present
Major condition noted Previous bleach exposure, heat exposure, frayed or compromised ends, surface dryness, and heavy oil use
Service completed Full-head lightening while preserving a small root area, amino-acid smoothing treatment, flat ironing, and a trim
Client goal Cool platinum/white hair with a dimensional darker root and a short styled shape
Next service Friday color and toning appointment

What we completed today

Your hair was lightened while a small amount of root area was preserved. The hair was then smoothed with the Amino Acid Smoothing Treatment and flat ironed. The result showed more visible length, a smoother surface, and improved shine compared with the pre-service appearance.

The hair handled the processing without visible shedding or severe breakage during the appointment. That is encouraging. At the same time, the ends still showed areas of dryness, fraying, and previous lightening damage. Some of those ends were intentionally left so that we could preserve enough length for the planned mohawk shape. We will continue improving the ends over time rather than removing all of the length in one appointment.

The mid-lengths can look glossy while older or previously bleached ends look dull because the cuticle surface is more irregular and porous. Frayed, weathered, or heat-stressed ends scatter the light instead of reflecting it cleanly.

That is why applying more oil does not automatically solve the problem. Oil can temporarily increase slip and shine, but it cannot rebuild a frayed edge or reverse every effect of previous bleach and heat. The long-term solution is a combination of controlled trimming, conditioning, careful heat use, and preventing additional overprocessing.

What we are doing Friday

The color goal

Your inspiration is a cool platinum-white short style with a darker, dimensional root. The goal is a polished cool blonde through the short shape, with a controlled root shadow that makes the blonde appear brighter.

The current canvas is not yet an even pale-yellow level 9–10. You're predominantly level 6–7 result with strong orange and copper-gold warmth with ends lighter about level 8/9, but the hair is not evenly light enough for a single pale pearl formula to create a final white result. In about 4weeks we can perform another lift on the mid shaft to improve color.

My selected toning line: Redken Shades ALK

Because you want a stronger, fuller toning effect I will use the Redken Shades ALK for toning and Shades EQ for root shadow.

Shades ALK is an alkaline demi-permanent color designed for tone shifting, brightening, darkening, correction, and low-lighting.

Why we are not making her platinum-white this Friday

Toner deposits or shifts tone. It does not replace missing lift. Her current orange-gold sections need more lightening before they can reflect a clean pearl-white result.

Trying to force the final platinum result immediately after full-head lightening and an amino-acid smoothing service could create several problems:

  • Additional lightening could reduce the low-density hair’s fullness.
  • Previously bleached ends could become more fragile or begin snapping.
  • The remaining length needed for the mohawk shape could be lost.
  • Uneven porosity could make the white tone take unevenly.
  • A stronger color application could make the hair look duller rather than brighter if the underlying canvas is too dark.

For Friday, the realistic goal is maximum brass control, improved shine, a cooler blonde direction, and a polished darker root. The final platinum-white result is a staggered goal rather than a same-week promise.

I also recommend we do a REPAIR treatment at this session i need to access if a moisture mask or k18 or color repair type is best path.

Your take-home routine

Cleansing and oil control

Your hair can feel oily on the surface and still be dry underneath. Frequent castor-oil use can coat the fiber, attract residue, reduce movement, and make the hair look dull or dusty even when it feels oily to the touch.

Wash according to scalp needs and buildup rather than adding more oil to solve dryness. Use a color-safe shampoo and focus the cleansing at the scalp. Allow the lather to pass through the lengths without rough scrubbing.

A strong color-care option is MIZANI Moisture Fusion Moisture Rich Shampoo. Its role is gentle cleansing with a moisture-forward feel for coarse, dry textured hair. Choose one primary cleansing routine for the first few weeks rather than layering multiple repair systems at every wash.

Weekly moisture support

Use one moisture-focused mask approximately once weekly or every other wash, depending on how the hair responds. MIZANI Moisture Fusion Intense Moisturizing Mask is a strong option for coarse textured hair that feels dry. Biolage HydraSource Deep Treatment Mask is a good alternative when the priority is hydration and slip without making the routine heavily protein-focused.

Apply the mask in sections with enough water to distribute it. Detangle gently from the ends upward. Do not force a comb through dry hair or through hair that is not fully saturated with conditioner or mask.

Leave-in and heat protection

On damp hair before blow-drying or flat ironing, use a small amount of Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In Treatment. Its role is heat protection, smoothing, and easier brush glide. Because the hair is low density and has already received several chemical and smoothing steps, use the smallest amount that gives control.

Joico Defy Damage Invincible is a lighter spray-format alternative. It should replace the Redken leave-in on that styling day rather than being layered heavily with it.

Dry-hair finishing

Between washes, use only a few drops of Matrix Food For Soft Multi-Use Hair Oil Serum on the mid-lengths and ends when shine, slip, or flyaway control is needed. It is a more appropriate light finishing product for this routine than repeatedly coating the head in castor oil.

Do not apply heavy oil to the scalp or place castor oil on the hair immediately before flat ironing. Heavy oil plus high heat can make the hair feel coated, attract residue, and encourage repeated ironing in an attempt to restore shine.

Heat-styling routine for wearing the hair straight

  1. Wash and condition when the scalp or hair needs cleansing; do not keep adding oil to extend the style indefinitely.
  2. Apply the selected leave-in or heat protectant to damp, towel-blotted hair.
  3. Blow-dry with controlled tension and the lowest effective heat.
  4. Flat iron only after the hair is completely dry.
  5. Use one controlled pass rather than repeatedly chasing shine.
  6. Keep direct heat away from the fragile ends whenever possible.
  7. Wrap the hair or use a satin bonnet at night.
  8. If the ends stop reflecting light, feel rough, or begin snapping, schedule a trim rather than adding more oil or heat.

Your first four weeks after Friday

Week 1: Stabilize the color and protect the fiber

Complete the Shades ALK color service only after checking the hair dry and wet. Use the selected color-safe shampoo, moisture conditioner, and light heat protectant. Do not add another bleach service during this week.

Week 2: Rebuild softness and reduce buildup

Wash according to scalp and oil buildup. Use the moisture mask once. Keep heat to one planned styling session if possible. Avoid daily castor-oil application.

Week 3: Evaluate the ends and the color

Check whether the hair feels softer, whether the blonde still looks reflective, and whether the ends are becoming rougher. If the hair feels coated, remove buildup rather than adding another oil. If it feels dry but flexible, continue the moisture routine rather than automatically adding protein.

Week 4: Salon reassessment

Return for a salon check of the root shadow, blonde tone, shine, and ends. The next visit may be a gloss refresh, moisture service, trim, or a planning appointment for future lightening. It should not automatically be another full chemical service.

One-to-three-month salon roadmap

Month 1: Correct and stabilize

The first month is for cooling the color, controlling oil buildup, protecting the short shape, and learning how the hair responds after the amino-acid treatment. The main goal is not maximum lightness; it is keeping the hair strong enough to continue the plan.

Month 2: Maintain the shadow root and blonde tone

Refresh the tone only when the warmth returns or the color loses shine. Use a demi color service rather than repeatedly lightening the whole head. Reassess the ends and remove compromised tips as the client is comfortable with the length change.

6 - 8 Weeks: Plan Next Lift Session

If the hair remains flexible, does not snap, and the ends have improved, we will plan the the next lift targeting only the sections that remain too dark or orange to a more even pale-yellow canvas. If the fiber does not tolerate another lift, a cool pearl-beige or silver-blonde result with a dimensional root will be the healthier long-term version of the inspiration.

Friday treatment plan: repair first, then protect the color

After the Shades ALK service is fully rinsed, I will reassess how your hair feels while wet and dry before choosing the treatment. The color service and the treatment have different jobs: the toner controls the visible warmth, while the treatment supports the condition of the hair after lightening, heat, and the amino-acid service.

Primary repair choice: the amika Kurated Strength Wash + Care Set

If your hair still feels porous, weak, rough, or vulnerable after the color is rinsed, the most convenient home repair pathway is the amika Kurated Strength Wash + Care Set. It includes the amika The Kure Strength Repair Shampoo and Conditioner plus a travel-size The Kure Intense Strength Repair Mask. The set earns its place because it combines a repair-focused wash routine with a mask rather than asking you to assemble several separate products.

The Kure is designed for dry, damaged, chemically treated, and high-porosity hair. Its bond-fortifying approach is supported by conditioning lipids and butters, including borage oil, shea butter, mango butter, sea buckthorn, hydrolyzed quinoa, and panthenol. For your hair, that means the focus is not just making the surface feel oily or shiny; it is supporting softness, flexibility, manageability, and reduced breakage after the lightening service.

Use the set as a coordinated routine after Friday rather than layering it with every other repair product. Shampoo with The Kure Strength Repair Shampoo, condition with The Kure Strength Repair Conditioner, and use the included mask approximately once weekly when the hair feels weak or porous. If the hair feels stiff or overly strengthened rather than weak, I will use a moisture-focused treatment instead of forcing another strengthening step.

When I would choose moisture instead of The Kure

amika Soulfood Nourishing Mask remains the better alternative when the hair feels dry, stiff, or in need of softness and lipid nourishment but is not showing weakness. The MIZANI Moisture Fusion Intense Moisturizing Mask remains the richer moisture option for coarse textured hair that feels very thirsty. The Biolage HydraSource Deep Treatment Mask remains the lighter moisture-and-slip alternative when I want hydration without adding a protein-heavy direction.

These are alternatives, not a checklist. Choose one treatment per wash. Do not use The Kure, Soulfood, MIZANI, and Biolage masks together in the same wash day.

Where the color-protect step belongs

Color protection is the maintenance step after the repair decision. Once the tone is established, use the selected color-safe shampoo and conditioner for regular wash days, then use one leave-in or heat protectant before blow-drying or flat ironing. The existing Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In Treatment or the lighter Joico Defy Damage Invincible can fill that heat-protection role; use one, not both heavily layered.

The amika Kurated Strength set is therefore the repair-focused upsell, while the MIZANI, Biolage, Redken, and Joico products already listed remain targeted alternatives for moisture, slip, and heat care. The order is: cleanse, condition or treat, detangle, apply one leave-in or heat protectant, then style with controlled heat.

K18 repair option for take-home heat care

Because your hair has been lightened, smoothed, and will continue to be heat-styled, I also recommend the new K18 Biomimetic Hairscience HeatBounce Mask + Oil 3-Piece Travel Kit as an optional take-home repair and heat-protection routine.

This mini kit contains the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask, K18 HeatBounce Conditioning Heat Protectant, and K18 Molecular Repair Hair Oil. Each item has a different job:

  • K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask: use after shampooing on towel-dried hair, before conditioner, and wait the full 4 minutes before applying any additional styling product. It is the repair step for damage associated with lightening, color, chemical services, and heat.
  • K18 HeatBounce: use on towel-dried hair before blow-drying, and follow the product directions before additional hot-tool use. It is the heat-protection step, not another mask.
  • K18 Molecular Repair Hair Oil: use a very small amount on dry mid-lengths and ends for finishing, shine, and friction control. It does not replace the mask or HeatBounce.

For the first four to six shampoos after the color service, use the K18 mask according to its directions if the hair feels weak or porous. After that initial period, reduce it to every few washes or as needed. Do not use the K18 mask in the same wash as The Kure, Soulfood, MIZANI, or Biolage intensive masks. Choose one repair or moisture treatment per wash so we can tell what your hair is responding to.

Should we add the professional K18REPAIR service?

The professional K18 Biomimetic Treatment Add-On is most valuable when we are doing a significant lightening or other chemical service—not simply because the hair has a new product at home. The professional K18REPAIR system uses the professional molecular repair mist before or during the chemical work and the professional mask afterward. That is different from the take-home mask, which maintains the hair between appointments.

When I would use it for you

  1. Friday, only if the assessment calls for it: if Friday is primarily a Shades ALK tone and root-shadow service, I would not automatically add the full professional repair service. I will reassess the hair wet and dry after the color. If the previously lightened areas feel porous, rough, weak, or less elastic, the professional K18REPAIR treatment becomes a reasonable same-visit add-on.
  2. Before the next major lift: I would strongly consider integrating the professional K18REPAIR service into the next lightening appointment. That is the most strategic timing because the professional mist is designed to support the fiber before chemical stress and the professional mask addresses damage after the service.
  3. As a standalone repair appointment: if the hair begins to snap, loses flexibility, feels increasingly rough, or cannot tolerate the next lift, schedule the K18 service before pursuing more platinum. It can support strength and elasticity, but it cannot create missing lift or rebuild an already frayed edge.

The decision is therefore not K18 versus every other product. It is K18 for molecular repair and heat protection when the fiber needs it, amika The Kure for a coordinated strength-wash routine, and Soulfood, MIZANI, or Biolage when the hair needs more softness and moisture. We will select one treatment path at a time and avoid stacking multiple intensive repair systems in the same wash.

Final recommendation

For our coloring session we will use the Redken Shades ALK as the toning line. And we recommend immediate color care line & leave in routine.
